After a friend tried to convince James Baldwin to settle down, Baldwin responded with a quote that has stuck with my as I try to find my own identity and being.
“The place in which I'll fit will not exist until I make it.”
It’s a quote that comes from a place within James Baldwin’s experiences as both a black man, and a homosexual man, growing up in the height of the civil rights movement. The quote to me is incredibly powerful, because not only does it explain in one simple sentence, the struggles he’s endured, it also represents the determination he had to make things better for himself.
I chose to represent the quote with prints that don’t quite perfectly fit together, and even when they do, the history of the print before is still breaking through. I also chose to put the prints into a frame that makes them fit perfectly together, because I think, in the end, those experiences that leave us feeling out of place, put us together perfectly with the community around us.
